Chicago, IL; November 20, 2018 – ComplianceXL has been engaged by a large producer of packaging materials, to provide advisory and guidance support for WHMIS-2015 (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and GHS (Globally Harmonized System) to classify and label the hazardous chemicals.
The client is a global leader in developing and producing high-quality, responsible packaging for a variety of food, beverage, pharmaceutical, medical device, home and, and other products. The company has operations that span about 200 locations in 40-plus countries.
The WHMIS 2015 compliance deadline is slated for December 1, 2018. ComplianceXL has been given the responsibility to ensure that their entire supply chain has a single universal format for hazard communication, across production sites, in accordance with the WHIMS-2015 requirements before the deadline.
The engagement will kick-start with ComplianceXL conducting a Gap Analysis at the client’s site on the current WHIMS-1988 practices and the additional requirements to meet WHIMS -2015. The engagement will mainly focus on
- The new pictograms for hazards
- Chemicals classification criteria
- Label requirements- Primary and Secondary containers
- Safety data sheet (SDS) requirements /changes
In addition, a Senior Consultant will help the client ensure:
- The WHMIS program is in place.
- The Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the hazardous products used at the workplace.
- The hazardous products in use have the appropriate labels.
- Education and training records are in place for employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials.
There are major differences between US GHS and Canada WHIMS 2015 in the classification of Toxic chemicals, Combustible dust and Biohazard substances. As a part of the engagement, ComplianceXL’s Consultant will also advise the client on chemical classification and label design requirements as per GHS.
On completion of the initial engagement, the client intends to expand the engagement to cover additional regulatory compliance requirements related to REACH and CA Prop 65.
